Department of Tourism and Hospitality

According to the forecast, the number of international tourists in the world will reach 1.6 billion in 2020, and the global tourism revenue will also reach US $ 2 trillion. The government has defined the "Tourism Tour", "Medical Care", "Biotechnology", "Green Energy", "Culture and Creativity", and "Dedicated Agriculture" as well to be the six key emerging industries for the next decade in Taiwan.

Technical and vocational education aims at cultivating practical technical talents and skills. Therefore, it systematically provides students with professional knowledge and attitudes, strengthens the quality of human resources, creates innovative and pragmatic leaders for enterprises, enhances national competitiveness, and faces a diverse and changing era of knowledge economy for the school. It can make a lasting contribution to national technical and vocational education.

The department was originally known as the Department of Tourism, Catering and Hospitality, and was founded in 2002. In the past, it aimed at cultivating service personnel in the tourism and restaurant and hotel industries. In order to distinguish this department from the training objectives of the existing catering management department of the university, and to strengthen the tourism development policy of Taiwan, the department has been renamed to "Tourism and Hospitality Department" in the year of 2008 school.
 

 

Mission Goals

Since established in academic year 91, the department has directed students on the education goals of tourism, hospitality and hotel management as professionals. Operating in coordination to the scheme of Taiwan's economic development and accommodating the hospitality industry as the 21th century key development, it is essential to enhance the quality and quantity of professionals in Tourism and hospitality industry for a sense of quality assurance This will be accomplished through the department expanded in accordance in accordance with the real needs of the national economic development.

 

Academic Curriculum program

The curriculum courses offered by the Department are designed on the basis of the actual needs of the industry and social development, so that students can be better accomplished with all professionally-based knowledge and skills. Competitively, as to broaden students’ international view, the department emphasizes increasing the students’ foreign language ability ( Both in English and Japanese) and practical training with the program designed as Teaching of SandwichJunior students are required to complete at least twelve months of out of campus internship, including abroad training programs all over the world such as USA Canada Singapore Japan …and so on.)

Faculty

The department has 16 full-time, 24 part-time, and some supporting faculty with tertiary industry experience of practical skills.

Students have chances to choose further research graduate programs not only the domestic but the overseas sister schools.

Employment

The school is in Taipei, close to Industrial Zones including Linkou, Taishan, Wugu, Xinzhuang, Tucheng, Yonghe, and, Nankang, as well as Science Park Bureaus such as Guandu, Neihu. And it makes much more convenient for employment and training.

The sources have reported that the marketplace for the hospitality industry will consistently require much more employment.

Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology

■ Profile

Established in 1971, Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology originally went by the name of Kuang Wu Industry Junior College. The school was renamed to Kuang Wu Institute of Technology in 2000 and later as Technology and Science Institute of Northern Taiwan in 2006. In 2012 the school obtained university status and was rechristened to Taipei Chengshih University of Science and Technology, abbreviated as TPCU hereafter.

TPCU consists of three colleges: the College of Engineering, the College of Business and Management, and the College of Human Ecology. The academic programs the university offers include master degree programs, four-year and two-year undergraduate programs, five-year and two-year junior college programs, and the programs of the Night Division for Continuing Education.

Three educational directives are set by TPCU for its students who are dedicated to either graduate studies or business careers. First, TPCU makes it its goal to provide students with practical expertise. Having technical knowledge as its core, the school aims to consolidate students’ professional competence by concentrating on the values of innovation and invention as well as the application of aesthetics to daily life. Second, TPCU emphasizes the internalization of basic academic literacy. Its curriculum encases a wide range of disciplines such as workplace ethics, workplace etiquette, and knowledge of law. Third, TPCU endeavors to enhance students’language proficiency. Students are trained to apply both their Chinese and English abilities to workplace environments.

TPCU houses state of the art academic and recreational centers, among them our e-library, fitness center and the golf driving range. The utilization of these facilities is incorporated into students’ normal academic programs, and professional trainers and coaches are provided by the school. A food court and cafeteria area has a convenient store, coffee shop, Chinese and Western restaurants and the food street, provides students and teachers with a wide variety of choices and caters to every ones dietary needs.

TPCU has strived to establish international collaborations with academic institutions and corporations in the service sector. The school serves not only as a bridge for cross-strait academic interactions but aims to enrich its students with a world view. As such, TPCU has established sister-school programs with more than ninety universities in the Americas, UK, Asia and Europe. Overseas camping activities during the summer and winter vacations have been annually held by TPCU and its partner universities to create learning opportunities and life experiences abroad for our students. These activities help broaden students’world perspective and facilitate academic exchanges internationally.

TPCU campus is located on the Guandu Plain at the foot of Datun Mountain in western Taipei City. The picturesque school commands a panoramic view of Taipei’s magnificent scenery, including attractions such as Taipei 101, Mount Guanyin and the Tamsui River.

 

  • Honor Rolls

  1. Our university ranks among the top private polytechnic universities in northern Taiwan according to the honor rolls compiled by the Ministry of Education.

  1. TPCU has set a record for the number of awards obtained at International Competitions of Invention. The College of Engineering at our school have won a total of 245 medals , including 60 gold, 92 silver, 78 bronze and 13 special awards in the past five years.

  1. The curriculum in many of our programs endeavors to motivate students to be innovative and creative. The number of patent applications by our university exceeds more than 300. In 2012, our school ranked first in patent applications among the polytechnic universities in northern Taiwan. Industry-Government-Academia partnership project funding with our university exceeds more than NT$30,000,000 which has directly helped to promote industrial enhancement.

  1. Nearly 60 % of new graduates from our university enter job market after leaving school. 80% of new graduates from our tourism department find employment upon graduation, which shows that their working attitudes and professionalism have been recognized by their peers in many fields.

  1. The number of enterprises and corporations from the service and manufacturing sectors whom have established internship programs with our school exceeds 300, including the likes of Formosa TV (FTV), Gala Television Corporation (GTV), Suncity Group in Macau , Hotel Royal Group, The Landis Group (The Landis Taipei) , FIH Regent (Regent Taipei) , Far Eastern Realty, Microsoft, Delta Electronics, Inc. , China Airlines , EVA Airways , China Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC), Tonglit Logistics Co., Ltd., Fubon MOMO, and many more. By providing students with a multitude of internships options and opportunities, we aim to help new graduates find suitable and fulfilling employment upon graduation.
